Abstract
PURPOSE:To decrease the firing potential and the discharge-maintaining voltage of a cathode, by forming a magnesium-oxide layer on either magnesium or a magesium alloy to provide a cathode structure. CONSTITUTION:A base-body metal 1 is coated with either magnesium or a magnesium alloy 2 by means of hot dipping or the like. After that, a layer 3 made of magnesium oxide is formed on the surface of the base-body metal 1, a cathode for a direct-current gas-discharge display panel being constituted. As a result, the discharge-maintaining voltage of the cathode becomes 70V or below, since the work function of mangesium is 3.46eV and that of magnesium oxide is 1.9-2.0eV; the work function of an iron-nickel alloy is in the vicinity of 4.5eV and the discharge- maintaining voltage of that is approximately 170V.
