Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled powder capable of giving a molded article having a uniform internal structure, by mixing an aqueous colloidal polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) dispersion with carbon fiber powder under agitation, and adding a specific water-insoluble organic liquid to the resultant coagulated dispersion during the coagulation period.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous PTFE dispersion is added to an aqueous dispersion of carbon fiber powder under agitation, and a coagulating agent is added to the mixture after the uniform mixing of both. During the coagulation period, a water- insoluble organic solvent, e.g. hexane, CCl4 or trichlorofluoroethane, having a boiling point of 30W150°C and a surface tension ≤35dynes/cm at 20°C is added to the resultant mixture. Preferably, the water-insoluble organic solvent is added in a period of B zone and before or after the peaks P1 and P2 of the agitating torque at a time. The fine powder thus obtained has a particle size of usually 200W5,000μ, is easily separated from the dispersion and will not form a coagulum even after drying with a high fluidity.
