CONSTITUTION:A luminous tube 4 is supported along the tube axis of an outer tube 1 by means of supports 5 and 6. The ends of the luminous tube 4 is provided with main electrodes 7 and 8, and a starting auxiliary electrode 9 is provided near the main electrode 7. The tube 4 is charged with mercury, a metal halide and a rare gas. The temperature at the ends of the tube 4, which are near the main electrodes 7 and 8, can be maintained to be higher than that at the central wall of the tube 4 during lighting, through the constitution of the electrode coil of the electrode 7 as well as through the appropriate determination of the inner diameter of the tube 4.
