Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a continuous and uniform coating film through only one time of baking by specifying the moisture content of a water-base coating applied on a metallic substrate having an intricate shape then applying electrodeposition coating.
CONSTITUTION: A water-base coating is applied on a substrate made of conductive metal of bag shape or an intricate shape having slit parts etc. Thence, this coating film is left standing to regulat the moisture content in the coating film to about 2W15wt%. The moisture content is determined by the measurement of the substrate weights before and after drying. In case when the moisture content is lower than that of said range, the conductivity of the coating film lowers and electric resistance increases; hence, the formation of the electrodeposition coating film of the next process is difficult on the thin film where coating is difficult such as the inside part of the bag shaped part etc. of the substrate. If, on the contrary, the moisture content is higher than said range, the water-base coating elutes and the electrodeposition coating film is formed on the water-base thick film part as well of the easy-to-coat areas because of low electric resistance, at the time when the substrate is immersed in an electrodeposition coating bath in the next process, and this produces the waste of the coating. The substrate controlled of the moisture content and electrodeposition coated is baked and dried.
