Abstract
PURPOSE: To monitor wear of a tool and obtain good follow-up control of machining by utilizing the phenomena that the sound pressure level of cutting noise is proportional to the load of the tool and that the power with high frequency component increases as the wear progresses.
CONSTITUTION: Sound pressure sensed off by an audio sensor 1 is put into a preamplifier 2, where it is estimated in the form of voltage in compliance with sound pressure level. Out put signal of the preamplifier 2 is divided by a by-pass filter 21 and a low-pass filter 22 into high and low frequency components, which are sent through an amplifier 3 and a mattenuator 23 to a calculator 5 as high frequency sound pressure signal VHP and low frequency sound pressure signal VLP, respectively, and there the ratio of these two signals VA=VHP/VLP will be calculated. This ratio VA has a certain relation with the wear of tool tW, whose condition accordingly can have one of the three divisions determined according to the limit wear sound pressure ratio VAL and wear progress sound pressure ratio VAS. Comparators 24, 25 will judge which division the tool concerned shall belong to.
