Abstract

PURPOSE: To monitor a tool such as grinding wheel and cutting tool placed in an actual work for the purpose of knowing proper replacement time on the basis of the change in its form by measuring the figure of cutting marks left on the surface of the work.
CONSTITUTION: The figure of cutting marks on the surface of a work 10 processed by a grinding wheel is measureed by a microdisplacement gage 11, and figure signals obtained by this transducing are put in a high-pass filter 12 and a low-pass filter 13. The signals grouped into the high and low frequency components are converted into energy by intergrators 14, 15, and the energy ratio of the low frequency component to the high one is calculated by a subtractor 16 to obtain an output 17. The timing of transition in the output 17 from the stabilized zone B to the increasing zone C sensed by a waveform shaper 18 will give a proper timing for replacement of the tool, when separation of grains etc. should have occurred and the tool should undergo dressing if arranged conventionally.
