PURPOSE:To enable page marks to be formed of less number of bar marks by constituting the page marks from bar marks of different lengths and light scanning these bar marks thereby discriminating pages. CONSTITUTION:Respectively corresponding page marks 4 are printed on the margin part of each page 2 of a pass book P in a black color. These marks 4 indicate the page number of respectively corresponding pages 2 and consists of the combination of a long bar mark 41 and a short bar mark 42. If this pass book P is inserted with its required pages being held open into the insertion port of an automatic depositing machine, the part of the marks 4 is light scanned in the lengthwise direction of said marks. The presence or absence of the marks 41, 42 is detected with respect to detection ranges D1, D2, and the corresponding pages are discriminated by the results of said detection. Thereby, the page marks may be formed of less number of bar marks, and the limitations of the page number that can be displayed may be considerably eased.
