Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the efficiency of an engine and to lower the fuel consumption, by increasing the total area of air filters and thereby lowering resistance to the air flow through provision of outer and inner elements and a shield plate disposed between the inner element and the outer element.
CONSTITUTION: When engine is set into operation, air is introduced from an inlet port 3 by the suction force of the engine. A portion of the air thus introduced passes through an outer element 6 and is carried along a shield plate 7 into a hollow space 10, while the remaining air is carried to shield plate 7 via a hollow space 9 and passes through an inner element 11. Then, it is carried through an opening 8 and introduced into a cylinder via an outlet port 1 together with air carried into the former hollow space 10. With such an arrangement, it is enabled to increase the filtering area of the element as compared with the conventional air cleaner, by an amount corresponding to the filtering area of the inner element 11. Providing that the filtering area of the inner element 11 is, for instance, 70% of that of the outer element 6, resistance to the air flow can be reduced to (1/1.7)2. Therefore, it is enabled to improve the efficiency of engine performance.
