In the manual subscanning reader main body side, signal generator 5 is provided which generates a boundary signal by the reflection light from the boundary signal generation face of the read region prescribing material. Since the light quantity incident to photodetector 5b of generator 5 is different in the reflection light from materials 7 and 8 with that of from original 0, the boundary signal indicating the boundary of the read region is transmitted from generator 5 if the reader is moved from the start part side to the end part side on the read region prescribing material.
