Abstract

PURPOSE: To suppress the generation of noise at the operation of a cross-flow fan by a construction wherein the shape of the end surface of a tongue member of the fan casing opposing to the impeller is changed in the axial direction of the fan in such a manner that the gap defined between the above-mentioned end surface and the outer peripheral surface of the impeller is greatest at the central part of the impeller and smallest at both axial end portions.
CONSTITUTION: A member 22 attached to the fan casing and projected to oppose to the impeller 3 of the fan has an end surface 22 which a countour which varies along the axis of the impeller in such a manner that the clearance y1 formed between the outer periphery of the impeller 3 and the end surface 22 of the projected member 21 is greatest at the axial central portion of the impeller and smallest at both axial end portions of the impeller 3. In general, the velocity of air in cross-flow fan is highest at the axial central part of the impeller and is comparatively low at both axial end portions of the same. Namely, the central part of the impeller makes a greater contribution to the work and, hence, produces higher level of noise. In the cross-flow fan thus constructed, the generation of noise is effectively suppressed because the clearance y1 is greater at the axial central part than at both axial ends of the impeller.
