Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the amount of an acidic substance in a poly α-olefin, in a short time, by the use of a copper-containing metal as an inactivation catalsyt in the treatment of a poly α-olefin containing a halogen-containing metal catalyst with gaseous epoxide.
CONSTITUTION: An acidic substance such as active halogen, etc. originated from the residue of a catalsyt existing in a poly α-olefin containing a halogen-containing metal caltalyst, is inactivated by introducing a 2W8C epoxide gas to a fluidized bed dryer charged alternately with (A) the poly α-olefin containing the catalyst, and (B) copper or copper alloy containing ≥1 wt% of copper as a catalyst for the inactivation reaction of the acidic substance with the epoxide, and contacting the epoxide gas with the fluidized bed at a temperature between room temperature and the melting point of the poly α-olefin, for 10 seconds to 5 hours.
