Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the compression restorability, flexibility and strength of graphite without losing the characteristics by treating the graphite with a soln. prepared by dissolving a specified amt. of potassium permanganate in conc. sulfuric acid, followed by washing, heat expansion and heat molding.
CONSTITUTION: 100pts.wt. of graphite such as natural flake graphite is treated for 0.5W15hr in a soln. prepared by dissolving 7W25 parts of potassium permanganate in about 500 parts of conc. sulfuric acid. The treated graphite is then charged into a large amt. of water together with the soln. to filter and wash the graphite. The washed graphite is optionally treated with phosphoric acid or the like to control oxidation and heat expanded at about 600W800°C for 1W3min to obtain graphite particles expanded to a bulk density of about 0.005W0.02g/cm3. The particles are press-molded by compression molding or other method. Thus, a flexiblie graphite material suitable for a gasket and packings is produced.
