Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the title gasket which has excellent handling properties, sealing properties and adaptability to the opposing surface, by a construction wherein a graphite sheet having excellent mechanical strength obtd. by molding expanded graphite under pressure, is arranged at the central part, and at least two layers of a low-density graphite sheet are arranged at the outermost layer part.
CONSTITUTION: Natural scaly graphite is treated with a mixed acid of conc. sulfuric acid-conc. nitric acid, washed with water, and then dehydrated to remove excess acid and the acid deposited on the surface of the graphite. The graphite is subjected to an expansion treatment at 600W1,000°C to obtain an expanded graphite which is then molded under pressure to produce a graphite sheet 1 having excellent mechanical strength of 80kg/cm2 or higher. Then the graphite sheet 1 is arranged at the central part. At least two layers of a low-density graphite sheet 2 having a density 0.8W1.4g/cm3 as the outermost layer part are laminated to the graphite sheet 1. The laminate is molded under pressure.
EFFECT: A gasket having good handling properties can be obtd. in which the sheet is not broken and the edge part of the sheet is not damaged during application.
