Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance a breakwater function resulting from the increase in absorption of energy from the sea wave covering a long period, by locating a roller and a barrier, coupled together through the medium of a coupling material and an expansion-contraction device, on an inclining structure built in the sea.
CONSTITUTION: A longitudinal girder 5 is mounted on steel piles 1 hammered into the sea bed, a reinforced concrete plate 6 being secured thereon to form a slope. A roller 7 and a barrier 8 placed on the slope are connected together through the medium of a coupling material 9 and an expansion-contraction device 10. In the event of the seas running a small wave, only the barrier moves upward through the working of the expansion-contraction device 10. In the case of the seas running a large wave, the barrier 8 is pushed upward together with the roller 7 through the working of the coupling material 9. In the case of the waves rolling on at an angle, it causes the expansion-contraction device 10 to be functioned and thereby the barrier 8 itself is pushed upward at an angle to its normal position centering around a projection 14 provided at the bottom of the barrier 8 in an indeavour to meet an advancing direction of the waves at right angles.
