Abstract

PURPOSE:To accurately perform the plate width controlling of rolled material over a wide range by generating the magnetostriction corresponding to a required plate thickness control amount in a magnetostrictive member based on the output from an operator. CONSTITUTION:The thickness of the rolled material S having been rolled with work rolls 1, 1 is measured with a thickness gauge 14 and its deviation from a reference thickness is outputted and inputted to an operator 15. A load gauge 11 which measures the load during rolling puts its output P into the operator 12 which in turn operates the internal stress of a magnetostrictive rod 9 and further inputs the same to an operator 13 which then calculates the magnetic permeability of the magnetostrictive rod 9 for the internal stress. This output is sent to an operator 15. The operator 15 calculates the current for magnetization necessary for the magnetostrictive rod 9 to generate the magnetostriction corresponding to the required plate thickness control amount from the magnetic permeability signal input from the operator 13 and the thickness deviation from the thickness gauge 14 and supplies the same to a magnetizing coil 16. Magnetostriction is produced in the magnetostrictive rod 9 by this magnetic line of force and the rolling reduction of the screw-down devices provided to upper and lower housings 5, 6 is controlled by the elongation and contraction thereof, whereby the accurate plate thickness control is accomplished.
