Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the rise of cathode overvoltage at high current density by the procedure in which an oxygen-containing gas is supplied to a gas chamber to diffuse it into cathode and also gas bubble is generated from the surface of cathode in anh electrolytic bath using as the cathode a gas diffusing electrode by which the catode compartment is isolated from the gas chamber. CONSTITUTION:The alkali chloride aqueous solution 15 is introduced from the inlet 12 to the anode compartment 3, and the dilute aqueous solution 16 formed after electrolysis is drawn out of the discharge port 13. On the other hand, when sending by pressure the oxygen-containing gas 22 from the inlet 11 to the gas chamber 5, oxygen is diffused the gas-diffusing electrode 7 and reacted with water and at the same time unreacted oxygen or inert gas sent by pressure to the cathode compartment 4 is discharged from the discharge port 10 in the form of bubbles from the surface of cathode after being separated from the cathode liquid. This method prevents the leakage of the cathode liquid to the gas chamber and also raises the efficiency of contact between oxygen and water on the surface of the cathode, thus permitting the lowering of electrolytic voltage.
