Abstract
PURPOSE:To make it possible to operate by high current density and to prolong the useful life of an electrode by carrying out the electrolysis while the air warmed by contacting with an aqueous solution of a caustic alkali or an alkali chloride is generated air bubbles from the surface of a cathode into a cathode liquid. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous sodium chloride solution 15 is supplied in an annode chamber 3 and the diluted salt water 16 after electrolysis is withdrawn and the produced chlorine 18 is withdrawn as a product. Moreover, the sodium hydroxide produced in a cathode chamber 4 is taken out from an exhaust port 9 as a product. On the other hand, the air 22 is contacted with an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution with a temp. of 40 deg.C or more or a sodium chloride solution 23 with a temp. of 40 deg.C or more in a gas-liquid contact apparatus 24 to be warmed to 40-80 deg.C and, thereafter, supplied into a gas chamber 5. Oxygen in this air is diffused into an interior of a gas diffusion electrode 7 and reacted with water in the vicinity of a surface thereof to produce a hydroxyl group. Moreover, while at least a part of the warmed air is generated as air bubbles from the surface of the cathode 7, the electrolysis is carried out. Thereby, if electrolysis voltage is lowered to a large extent, the electrolysis by high current density can be carried out.
