Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently separate the isotopes of a U cpd. or the like by solidifying a mixt. of the isotopes together with a plurality of specified diluting gases; adjusting the compsn. of the gases; and selectively exciting the solidified product by applying infrared laser beams.
CONSTITUTION: Temp.-controllable support plate 2 is set opposite to infrared laser beam applying window 1a in separation chamber 1, and gas reservoir 22 for a gaseous isotope mixt. and a plurality of diluting gases, gas spray nozzle 4, etc. are provided. The isotope mixt. is fed into chamber 1 together with the diluting gases such as Ar and Xe which will not chemically react with the mixt. and are transparent with respect to infrared laser beams. In chamber 1 they are solidified on plate 2 cooled to the temp. of liquid N2 or below, and infrared laser beams are applied to the solidified product from irradiator 3. At this time, the compsn. of the diluting gases is adjusted, and the absorbed wavelength lines of the solidified noticed isotope are allowed to coincide with the wavelength lines of the laser beams. Thus, the isotope is selectively excited and grown on plate 2. The grown isotope is heated, and the enriched product is captured with traps 24, 25.
