Abstract

1506766 Selective excitation by electromagnetic radiation KRAFTWERK UNION AG 25 Sept 1975 [7 Oct 1974] 39430/75 Heading G6P In a method of selectively exciting, dissociating or ionizing at least one component, but not all components, of an isotope mixture by irradiating the mixture with a beam of electromagnetic radiation, the mixture is expanded adiabatically, prior to irradiation, to cool it to below 100‹ K. Molecular vibrations thus freeze. An embodiment particularly described envisages the mixing, in a small chamber 23 (whose walls may be heated or coated with P.T.F.E.). of UF 6 from a supply 2 and HBr from a supply 3 prior to passage of the mixture through a nozzle 24 and into a laser beam 4. A diaphragm 11 separates portions of the gas stream which have and have not traversed the beam 4. Cooled surfaces 14-16 are provided for condensation of condensable fractions, while volatile fractions are removed by pumps 5, 6. The beam 4 may be produced by one or more lasers (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) and may have such intensity as to provide multi-step excitation. Dissociation or ionization are possible when two lasers are used.
