PURPOSE:To in crease the compression efficiency by providing plural number of data compression character groups. CONSTITUTION:The compression characters of the conversion table memory are divided into three groups: compression character group I composed of the English capitals; group II composed of the figures; and group III composed of English small letters each. The compression characters are transmitted in the form of the 8-bit conversion codes through conversion table memory 417, and the first letter belonging to the compression character group is changed into the conversion code of 8 bits. And the subsequent letters of the same group are transmitted in the form of the compression codes. At the reception side, control circuit 452 gives the decision for the compression character to the reception data set to buffer register 455. And in the case of the compression code decided, the higher 4 bits are set to address register 456, and at the same time the types of the compression character group are set to address register 458. And then the conversion indication signal is sent to conversion table memory 460.
