Abstract

PURPOSE: To combust fuel component, without causing catalyst activity deterioration due to sulfur oxide, gas containing one or more of H2, CO, hydrocarbon is contacted with platinum group metal catalyst carried by titanium oxide under oxidizing agent at a specified temperature.
CONSTITUTION: A sulfur oxide containing gas that includes one or more of H2, CO, and hydrocarbon as fuel component is oxidized and combusted by contacting with platinum group metal catalyst carried by titanium oxide under an oxidizing agent at a temperature below 800°C. For example, a titanium oxide catalyst carrying 0.5 wt% of Pt and a gas containing SO2 1000ppm, SO3 50ppm, CO 5000 ppm, and O2 2% are contacted under a condition of gas volume velocity of 10000h-1, and at 300°C, providing CO oxidation ratio of greater than 95%. Such catalyst, as comprising a highly active component and titanium oxide resistant to sulfur oxides, enables to maintain a high catalytic activity for long periods.
