Abstract

PURPOSE: To measure the width of continuous sheet material in a contactless state by applying a scattered light from the backside to the sheet and by scanning and detecting the light in the direction of width by means of a constant speed rotary mirror located at the front side of sheet.
CONSTITUTION: The scattered light source 4 is placed in the backside of both areas 2 of the cloth 1, the self-rotation mirror 5 is provided to the rotary head 9 in the front of detection plate 3 to scan the whole width of the cloth 1 and to apply the light to the photoelement 11. To detect the location at which the mirror 5 is parallel to the cloth, a unit that consists of the point source 12 and the photoelement 13 is provided, all signals in the direction of the width of cloth are divided into two parts by a signal given by the said unit 12, 13, the dimensions based on the rotation angle are obtained for respective sides of the divided right and left directions, and added to each other to obtain the dimension of width. In this way, an error caused by the stagger of cloth can be removed to obtain an exact dimension.
