Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the electro-optic modulating element of low cost and long life by rotating the plane of polarization of rays through the utilization of the change of double refractive indices caused by changing the field strength to be applied to a macromolecular electrooptic film.
CONSTITUTION: As the macromolecular electrooptic film, there are the ones obtainable through polarization of polar macromolecular films such as, e.g., polyvinyl fluoride, polyvinylidene fluoride and polyvinyl chloride under high-voltage DC electric field. A film 3 of uniaxially oriented polyvinylidene fluoride is inserted between a pair of calcite polarizers of a polarizer 1 and analyzer 2 in such a manner that it parallels or tilts to the analyzer. Thin film electrodes 4, 4' are evaporated on both surfaces of this film but small holes 5, 5' are provided in the vapor deposition films of only the portions where light passes, through which the light from a light source 6 is recorded in a photoelectric transducer 7. By applying voltage to the electrodes and making use of the change in the double refractive indices of the films, the plane of polarization of rays may be rotated.
