Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide an economical catalyst effective at a low temperature as catalyst for removing nitrogen oxide by a method wherein a specific molar ratio of aq. ferrous and ferric salts solution is treated with alkali to prepare iron based oxide. CONSTITUTION:Alkali such as sodium hydroxide is added to an aq. solution which contains ferrous and ferric salts in molar ratio Fe<3+>/Fe<2+> of 0.2-3. Then, black iron based oxide precipitates at pH8-12. The precipitate, after filtered and washed, is heated at 300-400 deg.C and dried. The resulted oxide essentially consists of magnetite and has a relative surface area about 40m<2>/g or more. The product is active at a low catalytic temperature and functions as an inexpensive nitrogen oxide removing catalyst.
