Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as medicines, agricultural chemicals, and a raw material for polyamide, industrially advantageously, by reacting N- phenylcarbamate with formaldehyde in the presence of excessively strong acids having a large dissociation constant in acetic acid.
CONSTITUTION: An N-phenylcarbamate of formula I (R1 is lW6C lower alkyl or cycloalkyl; R2 is H, halogen, etc.; n is integer 1W4) is reacted with formaldehyde or a compound producing formaldehyde, in the presence of an acid having a large dissociation constant (Ka) of 1.25×10-7 or above at 25°C, e.g. hydriodic acid or hydrobromic acid, to obtain polymethylene-polyphenyl-polycarbamate of formula II (m is integer 0.1W5). This method provides a reaction rate twice or more that in the well-known ones by ordinary acids, and increases the yield of products per unit time, with lighter equipment.
