Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare β-chloroethylbenzene useful as an intermediate of sodium styrenesulfonate, etc., easily, in an industrial scale, at a low cost, without generating of waste liquid, etc., by chlorinating styrene as an inexpensive raw material and hydrogenating the chlorinated product.
CONSTITUTION: A chlorinated product consisting mainly of α,β-dichloroethylbenzene and β-chlorostyrene derivatives expressed by the formula (X is H or alkyl; n is integer of 1W3), is prepared by reacting styrene or its derivative with chlorine. The product is reacted with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst (e.g. chlorides of noble metals such as Pd, Pt, Rh, etc.) to give β-chloroethylbenzene. The process can be carried out easily, at a relatively low temperature.
