Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent a power inverter from being damaged due to starting failure, by limiting the duty in the energization time of each arm of the power inverter.
CONSTITUTION: AC power is changed into AC power of variable frequency and voltage by a semiconductor power converter consisting of a power rectifier 4 and a power inverter 7. The AC power of variable frequency and voltage is supplied to a synchronous motor 20 to start it. In the initial stage of the starting of the motor 20, the power rectifier 4 is controlled to intermit a direct current to commutate the power inverter 7 and the duty in the energization time of each arm of the power inverter is held down to a prescribed value. As a result, an enough starting torque is obtained, and the damage of the power inverter can be prevented if starting failure should take place.
