Abstract

PURPOSE: To facilitate disposal or storage of waste through reducing its volume and ensuring the sealing of harmful materials by use of microwave to fuse and solidify powders and waste such as incinerator ashes and sewage sludge.
CONSTITUTION: Waste material contg. silicon dioxide and consisting of powder, block, or mixture of incinerator ash, sewage sludge, plating sludge is charged into a fusion furnace having a microwave oscillator and fused by microwave, glassified and solidified. This fusion process of the waste at 1,400W1,600°C by use of microwave powder causes a mechanism in which net structure of silicon oxide includes other oxides as either intermediate oxide or modified oxide. Thus, harmful material is completely sealed and the initial volume is reduced to about 1/10 of the original size.
