Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the title manufacturing method capable of easy and complete separation of pitch component, by adding to a coal tar a specific paraffin or alcohol solvent.
CONSTITUTION: To a coal tar produced by high-temperature dry distillation of coal, as added, as an extractant, (A) a 1W7C paraffin solvent (e.g., n-pentane) or (B) a 1W5C alcohol solvent (e.g. methanol) in an amount of 2W7wt. times the amount of said coal tar followed by stirring and leaving the system to stand still at ordinary temperaturesW150°C throughout the process to effect precipitation of the pitch component which is then separated. The solvent used above can be recovered easily by heating the mixture of the solvent and the low-molecular weight component in the coal tar to temperatures above the boiling point of the solvent.
EFFECT: Capable of recycling use of solvents. The pitch thus separated is usable as a carbon raw material for coal binders, carbon fiber, electrode, etc., because it has not been subjected to any polycondensation due to heat.
