Abstract

PURPOSE: To cheaply obtain the title material having superior adsorption performance, separability, acid resistance, heat resistance, mechanical strength, etc. by blending finely divided caking coal with a tacky org. substance after which the blend is granulated, carbonized, and activated at a high temp. while feeding a little steam.
CONSTITUTION: Caking coal is finely pulverized to about 100 mesh or less and well mixed with about 10W15% of an org. substance exhibiting tackiness at ordinary temp., e.g. waste molasses or pulp liquor as a granulating agent. This mixt. is granulated with a granulator, and the granules are carbonized in a carbonization furnace at about 650W750°C for about 1W2hr to produce carbide, which is then activated in an activation furnace at 650W800°C for about 1W8hr while feeding about 0.1W0.2 part by wt. of steam per part by wt. of carbide per hr, thus obtaining the desired granular molecular sieve carbon material.
