Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a highly active and stable catalyst easily and at low cost by the procedure in which glass fiber is heat treated to extract and remove components other than silica and then treated with a great specific surface area of a metal salt by an exchange treatment to a catalyst support, and a catalyst metal substance is supported on the surface of the catalyst support.
CONSTITUTION: Glass fiber is heat treated in an acid containing Al, Si, Ti, Zr, etc., in order to extract and remove impurities other than silica from the base fiber on the one hand and also to support Al compound, Si compound, Ti compound, and Zn compound on the base fiber by exchange reactions on the other to obtain a catalyst support. Then, a noble metal, e.g., platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, etc., or a compound of vanadium, chromium, iron, copper, etc., is supported on the surface of the catalyst support obtained to obtain a catalyst. Also, a glass fiber woven fabric of a network structure can be favorably employed in the place of the glass fiber.
