Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate effectively oil phase and water phase by supplying a water base magnetic fluid to a mixture of oil phase and water phase and moving relatively oil phase and water phase by the action of magnetic field.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of water phase and oil phase supplied to a reservoir 1 is supplied through a supply pipe 3 to a separating tank 2 by means of a pump 4. During the passing of the mixture through the supply pipe, a water base magnetic fluid is also supplied from a supply pipe 5 to the supply pipe 3, thereby the mixture is mixed with the water base magnetic fluid. The water phase which is contacted the water base magnetic fluid within the separating tank 2, is accumulated at the bottom of the tank 2 by the action of magnetic field of a magnetic field generating device 6. The oil phase is discharged from a discharge pipe 7. The water phase containing the water base magnetic fluid is discharged through an outflow pipe 8. The water base magnetic fluid is a colloidal fluid which is obtained by coating fine particles of ferromagnetic material such as magnetite with oleic acid to produce hydrophobic particles, treating the surface of the hydrophobic particles with a hydrophilic surfactant and dispersing the resulting particles in water.
