Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound usable as a raw material for epoxy, polyimide, and polyamide resins in high yield, by reacting methyl-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride with sulfur mono- or dichloride.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride is reacted with 0.3W1mol, preferably 0.5W0.7mol, of sulfur mono- or dichloride in an inert solvent at 0W100°C, preferably 20W80°C, to give a low-melting tetrahydrocarboxylic anhydride of the formula (n is 1 or 2), (m.p.≤100°C).
USE: Epoxy resin hardeners having improved oprating efficiency, due to good compatibility with epoxy nesins at low temperatures.
