Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the strength of a high strength, heat resistant Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy by adding a specified amt. of Sb to the alloy to enable the Cu content to be raised without lowering the toughness.
CONSTITUTION: The Cu content of a conventional Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy is 3% or less, and by raising the Cu content to increase the strength the toughness is lowered. At this time, by adding a specified amt. of Sb to the alloy the Cu content can be raised without lowering the toughness to enhance the strength. The resulting Al alloy has a compsn. contg. Si 6W13%, Cu 3W6%, Mg 0.2W1% and Sb 0.03W1.0% or further contg. one or more out of Mn<1.5%, Cr<1.0%, Ni<2.5% and Ti<0.3% if necessary. This alloy is very excellent in strength and thermal impact resistance.
