Abstract

PURPOSE:One of dimers from butadiene, isoprene or 1,3-pentadiene is added to fuel gases as the effective component to give fuel gases a bad odor sufficient detectable even in low concentration. CONSTITUTION:The Diels-Alder reaction of butadiene, isoprene or 1,3-pentadiene readily gives their dimers respectively. The dimers are added to fuel gases in an amount of about 50 or more ppm. Or when they are used together with other known odorants, the use of 20 or more wt% of the dimer based on the odorants makes the effect remarkable. The liquefied petroleum gas containing the dimer has strong odor sufficient to be detectable even when the mixing ratio is as low as 1:1,000-2,000. These dimers sufficiently satisfy the conditions required as odorants, such as stability, toxicity, erosion, etc.
