Abstract

PURPOSE: To stabilize the plated surface of a steel material and to improve painting property, by treating the steel material plated with Mn or Mn alloy with an aq. soln. contg. a polyhydric phenol having 3 or more functional groups in the structure thereof to form a very thin film of the polyhydric phenol.
CONSTITUTION: A steel material plated with Mn alone, or with an alloy of Mn and Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Fe, or Sn etc. is treated with an aq. soln. of the following composition: An aq. soln. contg. 0.05W5% polyhydric phenol which includes in its structure 3 or more functional groups selected from the group consisting of pyrogallol, gallic acid, chebulinic acid, and ellagic acid. When the treated material is applied with a coating medium, the functional groups react chemically with the Mn-plated surface and with the coating to stabilize the Mn-plated surface and to improve the adhesion property of the coating.
