Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a chromate film having excellent corrosion resistance and appearance, by a method wherein a zinc alloy-electroplated steel plate having one or more coprecipitated heavy metals is treated with a specified composition of a H2SO4- acidic chromate treating solution.
CONSTITUTION: A zinc alloy-electroplated steel plate having one or more coprecipitated heavy metals such as Co, Cr, Ni, Mo, and In is treated with the following chromate solution in which a Cr6+/Cr3+ ratio and heavy ion concentrations are specified. The process provides an excellent film without being affected by slight variations in the amount of an added etching agent. As the chromate treating solution, a H2SO4-acidic chromate treating solution with a total Cr content (calculated as anhydrous chromic acid) of 5W15g/l, a Cr6+/Cr3+ ratio of 0.8W6.0, and a concentration of heavy metal ions such as Zn2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ of 0.03W0.16g/l is used.
