Abstract

PURPOSE: To remarkably improve the machinability of a steel alloy as compared to a conventional alloy by adding Ba or Ba and Cr and/or Zr, Cr, Co, Ni, Be, Ti, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A Ba-contg. free cutting alloy is obtd. by adding Ba to a steel alloy such as a Cr steel alloy, a Zr steel alloy, a Cr, Zr and Si-contg. steel alloy, a Ni and Be-contg. steel alloy, a Co and Be-contg. steel alloy or a Ti-contg. steel alloy. The amt. of Ba added is pref. about 0.005W1wt%. For example, in case of a free cutting alloy obtd. by adding Ba to a Cr, Zr and Si-contg. steel alloy, the Cr content is pref. about 0.3W1%, the Zr content about 0.15W0.45% and the Si content about 0.005W0.1%. This alloy is suitable for use as a material for parts such as welding torch requiring high hardness and electric conductivity as well as precision workability.
