Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve water-resisting and seizure-resisting performance of side seal of rotary piston engine, by forming nitride layer at least on the sliding surface and opposite side surfaces of the side seal by applying nitriding treatment at a predetermined temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Side seal 3 is fitted in side seal groove 2 which is formed in the side wall of rotor 1 of rotary piston engine near the apex of rotor 1 and which is shaped into an acruate from along the circumferential end portion of the rotor 1. Nitride layer is formed, by way of gas nitriding method, on the top outer surface (sliding surface) 6 of side seal 3 that is kept in sliding contact with the inner surface 8 of the side housing 7 and on the opppsite side surfaces 9 of the side seal 3 facing the opposite side walls 10 of side seal groove 2. That is, quenched-and-tempered steel in the form of a band is heated to a temperature of 550°CW650°C while keeping the same in an arcuate form having a required radius of curvature and then machined into an arcuate side seal. Thereafter, side seal thus obtained is subjected to gas nitriding treatment at a temperature of 520°CW590°C.
