Abstract

PURPOSE: To accurately measure the fracture toughness of the surface of a test material, by fitting the surface with a restriction member having the same strength as the test material to obtain the rigidity of a test piece.
CONSTITUTION: Tabs 12 are fitted on a test piece so that an opening 11 is provided between the tabs. The tabs have a width W1 of 38mm. The test piece has a width W2 of 42mm. The tabs are tightened on the test piece by bolts at distanes of 50mm and 150mm from the opening. the tabe 12 are made of the same material as the test piece 1. A fatigue notch 10 of about 1.5mm in depth is made by machining in the test piece at the opening. The tightened assembly is bent on three fulcra at a temperature of -80°C.
