Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain styrene oligomers having desired molecular weight distribution, and a hydrocarbon oil containing desired components, in high purity and yield, by the thermal cracking of styrene resins at a controlled cracking temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Waste styrene resins are cracked at 200W420°C for several minutes to several tens hours. When the cracking is carried out at 360W420°C, oligomers having a weight average molecular weight of 400W700, and a molecular weight distribution of from 300W2500 are obtained at an yield of about 30wt%, and when the cracking temperature is 200W280°C, the molecular weight distribution, the weight average molecular weight, and the yield of the resulting oligomer are 2500W 30000, 7000W9900, and 45W60wt%, respectively. On the other hand, the composition of the resulting hydrocarbon oil varies with the cracking temperature, i.e. the upper limit of the polymerization degree of styrene contained in the oil is 7 at a cracking temperature of 240W280°C, 4 at 300W380°C, and 3 at 400W420°C.
