Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the strength of iron ore pellets and to lower the powdering ratio thereof by blending a compsn. of a specified shape into raw material for the pellets.
CONSTITUTION: Finely divided iron ore of below 44μ is blended with 2W15% of needlelike or flaky particles of below 100μ longer side obtd. by crushing a cleavable lamellar mineral such as iron ore in Brazil, serpentine, serpentine asbestos, chrysotile or hornblende asbestos. This blend is pelletized into about 10mm pellets with a pelletizer. In the pellets, the needlelike or flaky particles exist in all directions and act as stud, increasing the raw strength of the pellets. The raw pellets are calcined to manufacture iron ore pellets having high strength and a low powdering ratio.
