Abstract
PURPOSE: To easily produce one of the title crystals at a relatively low temp. by mixing metallic V or metallic Ta, metallic B and Al in a crucible after which the mixt. is heated, held, and slowly cooled under specified conditions.
CONSTITUTION: In order to produce VB2, metallic V and metallic B are blended to the compsn. of VB2, changed into a ceramic crucible together with Al, and heated. In order to product TaB2, metallic Ta and B powder are blended to the compsn. of TaB2, charged into a ceramic crucible together with Al, and heated. The crucible is heated in a resistance heating furnace or the like. At this time, inert gas is introduced into the furnace to prevent evaporation or oxidation of the bath metal, VB2 and TaB2. The crucible is heated to the max. temp. of 1550°C, held at the temp. for 10W24hr, slowly cooled to solidify the batch, and cooled to room temp. at a cooling rate at which the crucible and refractories in the furnace are not broken. By pouring an inorg. acid such as hydrochloric acid onto the cooled block the bath metal is dissolved to take out a VB2 or TaB2 single crystal.
