Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the high purity cobalt of fine bar form as a binding material for super hard sintered alloy by hydrogen-reducing the basic cobalt carbonate formed from inorganic cobalt salt under high temperature.
CONSTITUTION: To the aqueous solution of Na salt, K salt or NH3 salt of hydrogen carbonic acid or the aqueous solution of Na2CO3, K2CO3, (NH4)2CO3 or the like in which CO2 is saturated under pressure is added the inorganic Co salt containg Co of 0.3W0.5 based on weight of CO3 in said aqueous solution. Inorganic Co salts such as sulfuric acid, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, etc. are used for the inorganic CO salt and its aqueous solution is mixed and stirred at 40°C or under to make its final pH to 7W7.4. The basic carbonate of Co prepared through filteration and washing of the precipitate having been thus formed is dried at 80W130°C in a still state. Next, it is reduced to metal Co in the hydrogen gas flow of 500W700°C. This has the fine bar-form crystals of 1W2μ in diameter and 10W20times these in length and is suited as the metal for binding of super hard sintered alloy.
