Abstract

PURPOSE:Glucose is oxidized with molecular oxygen in an organic solvent using a platinum catalyst to form title compound useful as food additive (for raising cake or additive to ''tofu'' bean curd) in one step in high yield and selectivity. CONSTITUTION:The oxidation of glucose with molecular oxygen is effected in an organic solvent as an amide, alcohol, aliphatic ether, ester using a platinum catalyst to form glucono-delta-lactone. The organic solvent may be a mixture and, when necessary, less than 20wt% of water may be added. The platinum catalyst is preferably supported on a carrier. The reaction temperature is 10-200, preferably 20-130 deg.C. EFFECT:The present process is more economic and suitable for the production in industrial scale than existing ones. USE:The demand of the compound is expanding also in civil engineering, architecture, drug, cosmetics and detergent.
