Abstract

PURPOSE: To convert mercury to insoluble state in produced sludgy by contacting a gas cintaining mercury vapor with an aqueous solution containing thiourea and copper salt at a temperature of above 50°C to absorb and remove the mercury vapor and adjusting the resulting waste washing to a pH of above 9.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution containing thiourea and copper salt is contacted with exhaust gas containing mercury vapor to absorb the mercury vapor. The resulting waste washing containing the absorbed mercury is subjected to an alkali aggregation treatment by adjusting the pH of the washing with an alkaline agent such as sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, etc. to an alkaline pH of above 9. Solids are separated from liquid to reduce the cencentration of mercury in the waste liquid to below the drain standard value (0.005mg/l). The elution of mercury from the resulting sludge containing mercury is prevented to pass the elution standard value (below 0.005mg/l). It is possible that the removal of mercury together with other air pollutants can be carried out simultaneously at high efficiency by previously absorbing mercury vapor by using the liquid at a temperature of above 50°C.
