Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an ether useful as a solvent industrially advantageously, by reacting a hydroxyl group-containing oxyalkylene compound with a lower aliphatic halide in the presence of an alkali (earth) metal hydroxide in excess to saturate the formed water.
CONSTITUTION: A hydroxyl group-containing oxyalkylene compound, preferably of the formula (R is H or hydrocarbon residue; R1 is 2W8C aliphatic hydrocarbon residue; n is an integer 1W30), is reacted with a lower aliphatic halide in the presence of an alkali (earth) metal hydroxide, preferably one or more types of hydroxides of Li, Na, and K, in an amount that is consumed in the reaction theoretically and necessary to saturate the formed water at the reaction temperature to 50wt% excess of it, in the absence of water other than the formed water to give an etherified oxyalkylene compound.
EFFECT: High yield and operating efficiency in one stage in a short time and easy purification.
