Abstract
PURPOSE: To achieve the stabilization of modulation efficiency with respect to the change in temperature and incident wavelength by subsequently changing the magnitude of applied electric field along the light transmission direction with a part of light modulating media.
CONSTITUTION: 2N pieces of electrodes A1, A2,..., AN and B1, B2,..., BN shown by diagonal lines are installed on a crystal 11, and +V1, +V2,..., +VN and -V1, -V2,..., -VN are applied to the respective electrodes. In addition, a uniform electrode is installed over the entire part on the back side of the crystal and is grounded. At the same time, its electrode period is continuously changed in the Y direction. Further the magnitudes of the applied voltages are so selected as to satisfy the relations of Vj=V0(j=K, K+1,...,N-1), V1<...<VK=V0,V0= VN-1> VN-1+1> VN-1>VN, so that the applied voltages gradually increase on both end portions of the crystal as they go toward the ends of the crystal. Thereby, the fluctuations in the modulation efficiency with prespect to the change in temperature and incident wavelength may be reduced and these kept stable.
