Abstract

PURPOSE:To realize 100% coupling and coupling at arbitrary dividing ratio between first and second waveguides in an optical waveguide circuit, by setting the curvature of respective waveguides of first and second dielectric bent waveguides placed concentrically. CONSTITUTION:A first optical waveguide 1 bent at radius of curvature R1 and a second optical waveguide 2 bent at radius of curvature R2 are provided on the same center of curvature. When an optical power of electric field amplitude strength 1 is excited to the first waveguide 1 alone, the phase constant difference may be set arbitrarily by varying the radii of curvature R1, R2. Also, waveguides of phase constant may be coupled 100%. The medium 10 around the waveguide is SiO2 layer formed by the CVD method. In this constitution, 100% coupling and coupling of arbitrary dividing ratio may be realized between the waveguides.
