Abstract

PURPOSE: The gas-phase disproportionation of toluene is effected in the presence of a catalyst of crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite modified with vanadium metal or its oxide to produce xylenes of high p-isomer content with industrial advantage.
CONSTITUTION: The gas-phase disproportionation of toluene is effected using a catalyst of crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite modified with vanadium metal or its oxide, in which the weight ratio of vanadium metal/zeolite is 0.01W5, preferably 0.05W2; the molar ratio of SiO2/Al2O3 is over 10, preferably over 15, at a WHSV of 0.05W100, preferably 0.1W50, and at 300W700, preferbly 400W600°C. Resultingly the content of the p-isomer increases to over 40% and reaches over 50% under the optimum conditions.
